Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson disclosed he narrowly avoided a potentially deadly incident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when a pair of track officials darted across the track immediately ahead of his car

The alarming incident occurred on the third lap when marshals were spotted on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to change his compromised front wing

Driver's Immediate Reaction

Moments later, Racing Bulls driver Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you just see that? I nearly... ended their lives"

"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"

"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I approached Turn One and there were just two guys sprinting across the track"

"I nearly hit one of them, honestly, it was extremely hazardous"

Track Safety Questioned

F1's overseeing organization, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is thoroughly reviewing the events

"After an occurrence at turn one, the race directors was notified that wreckage remained on the track at the turning point of that curve" commented the governing body

"During the third lap, safety personnel were notified and made ready to access the circuit and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"

"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had made a pit stop, the orders to send personnel were canceled and a caution signal was raised in that area"
